Coco Chanel said that “ Elegance is refusal”. And that is the message that the new advertisement campaign by fashion retail brand Viva n Diva, featuring acid attack victim Laxmi, sends out strongly and proudly. The refusal to accept that her life is broken. Or that she is no longer a woman…desirable and feminine.
The motive behind an acid attack is to scar a woman both physically and emotionally so that she loses her identity .Laxmi was attacked in 2005 at age 15, by a 32-year-old man whose advances she had rejected. Although laws exist to restrict the sale of acids in India, activists say it is easily available. In 2014, 309 acid attack cases were reported, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.
When I look at Laxmi , I marvel at her courage. As a woman, I can relate to the terror of a scarred face looking back at me from a mirror. We women obsess over a small line or wrinkle. Here stands a woman, defiant and strong, daring anyone to notice anything else but her inner beauty. And strangely, those scars on her face look beautiful too, you know. They’re a badge she wears for the world to show that she has lived.
And that she lives. With absolute , stunning grace.
